Over the Christmas Holidays 7 Explorers, 6 Scouts, 1 Cub and 4 leaders headed to Morzine in the French Alps for 5 days of Skiing. After making it to Heathrow just in time for our flight (thanks to the ice on the M5) we arrived safely at our Chalet in Morzine http://www.lescalade.com/
Following a good night’s sleep we were all up early for breakfast, got our skis fitted and then we headed up to Avoriaz to try out the slopes. With no new snow fall for around 5 weeks I thought we could be in for a hard week however with some careful management of the existing snow plus a top up from the snow canons; we did have 5 days of great skiing with blue skies and sunshine every day. It was almost perfect!
Each day was spent skiing in ability groups which included a 2 hour lesson with the French Ski School (ESF -Ecole Du Ski Francais). It was a baptism of fire for those who had not skied on snow before, some of the runs where particularly busy and icy and some careful guidance was needed to get down what has now become known as ‘The Devils Run’! Well done to all the beginners who persevered with the hard conditions and by the end of the week where skiing with much more confidence and finesse A Scout has Courage in all difficulties!
Evenings where spent relaxing in the Chalet with the odd walk down into the centre of Morzine town centre via the wobbly bridge. On New Year’s Eve the Ski Instructors showed off their skiing skills with a torch lit descent down one of the slopes. Here you can see the ‘snake’ of torches coming down the hill.

The Scouts eager to spot their instructors pointed out that we could spot them easily:
‘’You’ll be able to spot Bastian because he’ll be on his phone, and Pierre will be the one going backwards’’
We had a fantastic week, it was a pleasure to take the group, they all get on well with each other and represented their groups, the District, the County and the UK in true Scouting style. I hope we can do it again in a couple of years.
Thanks to the other leaders (Alex, Chris and Sam) for their help and support with the trip. I think we did a great job!!
Special thanks to Laetitia and Richard (and their staff) at Chalet L’Escalade for their help, hospitality and of course great food.
I’d also recommend these guys http://powdercab.com if you need any local transport around the Morzine area (Winter or Summer). Great Service.
