Scouting couldn't happen without our volunteers, they're fantastic! For Volunteer's week 2017, we decided to talk to a few of them to find out why they volunteer and what they get out of it. If you're interested in volunteering, why not have a look at some of the benefits, you can also email us at firstname.lastname@example.org and we will help you find a role.
Assistant Scout Leader
How long have you been volunteering for?
Since I first became a Young Leader when I was 14
How did you get involved and what inspires you to volunteer in Scouting?
I became a Young Leader with Beaver Scouts in my Group, when it was part of the Chief Scout’s Gold Award and haven’t left since. I think it’s one of those things that once you get into it you get the bug and can’t leave!
What are your favourite things about Scouting?
I like the interaction you get with young people; growing a relationship with them and feeling like they respect you. I love seeing them try something for the first time, leaving their comfort zone and realising they love it.
I also have to mention that Scouting allows me to still be a kid sometimes!
What positive impact do you believe you have on young people through volunteering?
It allows them to try new experiences that otherwise they wouldn’t have the opportunity to try. I also think it teaches them skills that help outside of Scouting, such as first aid so they know what to do if they ever come across a situation where they’d need that.
What advice would give anyone looking to join Scouting?
Just to go for it! That it’s not always easy and no one expects you to be able to walk into it but there’s lots of support out there and other volunteers willing to share their experience and passion for scouting.
How do you believe you have benefited by volunteering for Scouting?
I've moved a couple of times to somewhere where I’ve not known anyone and Scouting has really helped with that transition and allowed me to meet people out of the work environment. It’s also helped me in my career in terms of my ability to work and interact with different types of people.
