Activities are an integral part of Scouting and what makes it so exciting for the young people involved.  Locally we have a number of trained leaders able to provide activities like abseiling, archery, caving, climbing, rifle shooting and walking but there are many more that we take part in too.

Target Archery is an internationally recognised sport which is played at both the Commonwealth and Olympic Games.  The role of archery has changed over the centuries from one of the primary weapons of war through to that of modern day where it is that of a sport and leisure pursuit.

Target Archery is the main type of archery undertaken by Scouts, other types of archery may be undertaken, however, archery involving shooting at animal targets is not permitted.  Archery as a sport can provide the opportunity to improve skills and learn new ones.  It can be the ideal sport for those who do not like to take part in team sports, and is good for individuals and groups where a variety of special needs are present.

Rock climbing is an activity in which participants climb up, down or across natural rock formations or artificial rock walls. The goal is to reach the summit of a formation or the endpoint of a usually pre-defined route without falling.

Rock climbing is a physically and mentally demanding sport, one that often tests a climber's strength, endurance, agility and balance along with mental control.

Abseiling involves the decent of a rope using a friction device to control the speed of decent. It is popular as an activity on single pitch crags, from structures such as bridges and as a method of retrieving equipment stuck on a climb.

Rifle Shooting

Target shooting is an Olympic Sport, and one in which the United Kingdom has an excellent record.  Success requires concentration and the disciplined control of both mind and body.  It is a sport in which young and old, male and female, can compete together and which is available to many people to whom a lot of sport is inaccessible, for example those who are blind or in wheelchairs.

There are several types of Target Shooting recognised as a Scout activity.

Being a completely alien and unseen environment, caves have for generations been regarded by many as the domain of the sinister, and all those who participate in the activity as being equally strange folks. Nothing could be further from the truth. Not only are caves some of the most beautiful places on earth, they only show their beauty to those who explore their depths.

Unlike many other forms of adventures/outdoor activity, cave exploration holds a romance that clings to danger and brings the very best out of those who participate in it. Friendships bonded while exploring the underground are friendships formed for life.

Hillwalking is the movement on foot over hills and mountains. It doesn’t require any specialist equipment such as climbing ropes and can take place in varying terrains from gentle slopes and valleys through to wild remote areas. Hillwalking doesn’t have to be about climbing peaks. It can be just as much about enjoying the terrain you are walking in and developing navigational skills.

We try and include as many activities as we can in our programmes but there are obviously age and cost restrictions. We also heavily rely on the availability of skilled volunteers, which means we can't always put on all the activities young people would like to try but we will always do our best.

The activities above are just some of the things we do locally, there are many other activities that young people may be able to enjoy through Scouting, from abseiling to zorbing...
